Exploration remains one of the world’s favorite pastimes. Camping, hiking, climbing, spelunking: all of these common activities many around the world partake in on a daily basis.’
Even the greatest activities can be ruined by the smallest things, and in this instance, I’m talking about mosquitoes. They’re everywhere and as relentless as ever.
Products to get rid of them exist, though shopping for the best one is a confusing, almost soul-crushing experience. That’s where we come in. If you’re someone who constantly finds themselves in the great outdoors, then you may want to consider Off!’s Deep Woods Sportsmen Insect Repellent II.
Being designed for the outdoorsmen—or “sportsmen” as Off claims—then two things about the repellent are clear: it’s long-lasting and sweat-resistant. It should be at least if it’s to fulfill the goal the name implies, which is to satisfy the needs of people constantly around mosquitoes.
Off!’s website shows this repellent is made with 30% DEET—a 5% increase from their other repellents. 30% is the maximum recommended amount of DEET, so it should last at least 8 hours, if not more.
Nothing I found about this product says anything about being sweat-resistant though, which is mildly disappointing. However, the Amazon description says it resists perspiration, so I’ll give Off! the benefit of the doubt and assume it succeeds.
Besides the 5% increase in DEET, I see no difference between the Sportsmen II and Off!’s other repellents.
Off!’s products follow an annoying tradition of being available in different sizes without some of these sizes being easy to find. Fortunately, this isn’t the case here, though it’s still not perfect. I found one size—the 6oz—on Amazon but was unable to find the 8oz. Fortunately, Walmart had the 8oz available.
For an 8oz bottle, $5.88 is cheap. However, I do need to take into account the inconsistencies in where this repellent can be found and the inconsistent pricing. Overall though, the pricing isn’t near the worst I’ve seen.
How it Works
30% DEET is enough to confuse a mosquito’s sense of smell and disgust them with it’s taste. All that’s needed on your part is for you to spray the repellent onto your body. With it being an aerosol spray, applying isn’t difficult or time-consuming, though you may need to wait a couple minutes after applying for it to dry.
- 6oz aerosol spray: $9.85/bottle (Amazon); 3 pack for $22.76
- 8oz aerosol spray: $5.88/bottle (Walmart)
The pricing is inconsistent, which is a con of many repellents I’ve reviewed, though the bigger size being $4 cheaper works in favor of us, the buyers. Can’t complain too much about that, right?
Does it Work?
Off!’s repellents are a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to effectiveness. Fortunately, the Sportsmen II seems to accomplish what it set out to do: repel against mosquitoes and other insects while resisting sweat buildup.
Some reviewers claim the repellent has a strong but “ok” scent, so be mindful of that. Other than that, the product resists perspiration, lasts a long time, and isn’t difficult to apply.
We can’t base off our score on a pros/cons list. Instead, we need to grade the repellent on 3 areas, these areas being:
- Efficiency/Effectiveness (40%)
- Ease of Use (25%)
- Safety (35%).
Once each area has been properly graded, a weighted grade will be given to the repellent.
Efficiency/Effectiveness = 8.5/10
While it’s not the best repellent out there, the Sportsmen II succeeds in lasting a decent 8 hours while offering protection against sweat—perfect for the “sportsmen”. Its runtime isn’t as good as other repellents, it’s good enough for a hiking trip or time spent exploring.
Ease of Use = 9/10
Again, the repellent being resistant to sweat is a godsend for anyone who is out in the heat all day. It being an easy-to-use aerosol repellent helps as well.
Unlike other Off! repellents, I saw no reviews mentioning a broken dispenser or bottle, so I assume this product doesn’t suffer from it, which is great. The scent may be overbearing, but this entirely depends on your sensitivity to smell, from what I saw.
Safety = 9/10
Being made with DEET, the Sportsmen II is safe for anyone to use, though babies may want to stay away from it; not because it’s harmful, but irritation can occur. Overall, it’s a safe product to use.
